Artist's Comments

Unanimously hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the motion picture, the story is set in the 1600s, when the residents of a small Japanese village are seeking protection against repeated attacks by a band of marauding thieves. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune). The samurai get acquainted with but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal. The climactic battle with the raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed. It's poetry in hyperactive motion and one of Akira Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements. This is not a film that can be well served by any synopsis; it must be seen to be appreciated and belongs on the short list of any definitive home-video library.

that looks really cool :D I definetely like how you inked the faces in, and used some distance blur. I wish I could do that style :D

Wow... it's a really eye-catching piece! I've heard of the movie before, and even seen a scene or two... did you draw it from an actual scene in the movie, or did you just redraw the characters as you imagined it? (Either way I am amazed). :+fav:

I've always loved Seven Samurai (probably my favorite film of all time, if I had to pick one), and this image, which is, I think, the cover of my DVD, has always sticken me as both lovely and powerful. Your 'interpretation' of it certainly does it justice, while making it also something unique in itself. The stark use of contrast between black and white, shadow and light, and the harshness it gives the characters is outstand.

Fat kudos. +fav for sure.
